I am probably the luckiest person in the world. I have had an amazing series of careers that have permitted me to travel the world, often dragging my family along with me. And by family, I mean my husband, three grown children, 5 grandchildren, 2 dogs and 2 cats. And yes — even the cats and dogs have had to have passports for some of our trips! And while my working days are not yet behind me, my husband and I have committed to a plan that will see us retire together and travel full time in the next 10 years. In the meantime, we take advantage of every opportunity to hit the road and to create the conditions whereby we can ‘slow down and choose our own detours’. You may wonder why I put that in quotes? Well — like everything in my life — there is a story behind it and my intent is to tell the stories of our adventures for my family to have long after I am gone. I won’t divulge their names but I will refer to my adult male children as Thing 1, Thing 2 and Thing 3. And the grandchildren will just be referred to as *S*, *J*, *M*, *O*, and *T*. Maybe some day, with their collective consent, I will share their names but for now you know the code.
